How Werko works

How Werko counts jobs

Updated September 27, 2026

A count shows how many job postings Werko found on the sites it checks. It is not every job in a trade or a place.

Werko counts job postings that it reads on employer career sites and other public job sites. It counts each job once, even when several sites post it. Werko shows a count for a trade in a place only when it has enough current postings there.

Where postings come from

When one job appears in several places, Werko prefers sources in this order.

  1. The employer's own career site or hiring system.

  2. Another hiring system that carries the employer's posting.

  3. Job Bank, the Government of Canada job site.

A Job Bank posting still counts. Werko asks search engines not to list its Werko page, and it does not send that page to them.

Which trades count

Werko counts these ten trades. Dozer, excavator and backhoe operators count together as heavy equipment operators.

  • Construction electricians.

  • Industrial electricians.

  • Welders.

  • Carpenters.

  • Plumbers.

  • Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics.

  • Steamfitters and pipefitters.

  • Industrial mechanics and millwrights.

  • Sheet metal workers.

  • Heavy equipment operators.

Which postings count

A posting counts only when all of these are true.

  • The posting is open, and Werko has confirmed it at its source recently.

  • Werko has placed the job in one of the ten trades. The job requires doing that trade's work, or the employer accepts a qualification in that trade for the job.

  • The job is in a province or territory where Werko works. Werko does not count jobs in Quebec.

  • The province or territory in the posting matches the one Werko recorded for the job.

  • Werko has not removed the posting or its job site.

How counts stay current

Werko checks each posting again at its source. Each posting has a date by which Werko must confirm it again. A posting stops counting when it closes or when Werko cannot confirm it in time. Its Werko page, if it has one, can stay for a limited time after that. The page marks the posting as expired, because it closed or Werko could not confirm it. Then Werko removes the page.

How duplicates are removed

One job can appear on several sites. Werko groups these copies into one job and counts it once. The Werko page for the job links to one source, chosen in the order above.

When Werko shows a number

Werko counts each trade separately in each place. Werko shows a number only when a trade reaches its minimum in that place.

  • Metro Vancouver, Toronto and the GTA, Calgary and Edmonton share the same minimums. The minimum is 150 postings per trade for construction electricians, industrial electricians, welders and carpenters.

  • In those four areas, the minimum is 50 postings per trade for the other six trades.

  • In Winnipeg, the minimum is 50 postings per trade.

  • In each province or territory, the minimum is 10 postings per trade.

With some postings but fewer than the minimum, Werko says it has not collected enough to publish a count. With none, it says it cannot show posting data right now. Neither message shows a number.

Which place a posting counts in

A posting counts in its province or territory. Werko can also place it in one city area in that province. Werko checks the posting's recorded city first, then its location text, for the names listed for each area below.

  • Metro Vancouver: Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Metro Vancouver or Greater Vancouver.

  • Toronto and the GTA: Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto GTA, Greater Toronto Area or GTA.

  • Calgary: Calgary.

  • Edmonton: Edmonton.

  • Winnipeg: Winnipeg.

Werko makes a page for a posting only when its trade reaches the minimum for its city area or its province. Otherwise, Werko makes no page for that posting.

What a count does not tell you

Werko checks some employers and job sites, not every one. Each number counts only the postings Werko found. A count does not show how many workers employers need. Each count shows the date Werko counted the postings.

Remove a posting

You can ask Werko to remove a posting if you own the posting or its job site. Use the Contact link under Related pages below. On the form, choose the topic Remove a job listing. Paste the link to the posting or its Werko page. Werko acts on each request within two business days. While a removal is in place, the posting stays off Werko's job pages and counts, even when Werko finds it again.

How this page is made

Software drafts this page from the rules Werko uses to count jobs. A separate software check compares each statement with those rules. Different software then reviews the page for plain wording. Search engines can list this page only after both checks pass.
