Use the examples and guide below to describe your plumbing systems, project settings and actual qualifications. Apprentices can include supervised work and completed training. Check the requirements where you plan to work.
Plumber resume examples
These examples are fictional. They show wording for plumbers and apprentices. Replace them with work or training you actually completed.
Installed water supply and drain, waste and vent piping for a commercial building; coordinated fixture rough-in with the mechanical crew.
As a plumber apprentice, assisted with fixture installation under supervision; read drawings with the journeyperson and prepared materials for each task.
Located and repaired a leaking water supply connection during a service call; tested the repair and recorded the work completed.
Add your actual employer, project setting and responsibilities where useful. List qualifications only if you hold them, and use measurements only if you can support them.
What to include on a Canadian plumber resume
Lead with your certification, specialty tickets, project settings, and site training:
Red Seal endorsement
and your provincial code (Ontario 306A, Alberta journeyperson plumber, etc.).
Backflow prevention certification
under CSA B64.10/B64.10.1 — increasingly required for any commercial or institutional work.
Gas fitter class
G3, G2, or G1 in Ontario; A or B in other provinces. Many plumbing roles cross into gas work.
Site experience.
ICI? Hospital? School board? Oil sands camp? Residential high-rise?
Safety and site tickets.
CSTS-2020, Fall Protection, Confined Space, WHMIS, First Aid, and H2S Alive when relevant to the employer's requirements. List only training you actually hold.
List the qualifications and project settings that match the plumbing work you want.
Red Seal context: 306A and the provincial picture
The Red Seal trade is Plumber. The source-backed rows below separate compulsory, non-compulsory, and regulated province context:
Ontario
trade code 306A, classified as compulsory. You cannot perform plumbing work in Ontario without a Certificate of Qualification or as a registered apprentice. Skilled Trades Ontario administers.
Alberta
journeyperson Plumber through AIT. The Alberta trade profile is Red Seal-designated and marked compulsory for restricted activities; apprenticeship is four periods.
British Columbia
Plumber certification is administered through SkilledTradesBC. Plumber is not one of BC's current seven Skilled Trades Certification compulsory trades; confirm site or employer requirements separately.
Saskatchewan
Plumber is one of Saskatchewan’s compulsory apprenticeship trades administered through SATCC.
Manitoba
Plumber is a designated Manitoba apprenticeship trade; Manitoba’s current public compulsory list should be checked before treating it as a legal eligibility gate.
Quebec
Plombier under CCQ construction-industry competency certificates, with its own competency-card system and mobility recognition paths.
Where plumbing is compulsory or otherwise regulated, list the trade credential with your specialty tickets and project history.
The terminology shift on Canadian resumes: "journeyperson" is the standard provincial term, but "journeyman" still appears constantly in job postings. Use whichever the employer uses.
List the safety training and specialty qualifications you actually hold that apply to the plumbing work you want:
Backflow Prevention Tester
under CSA B64.10/B64.10.1 — mandatory for commercial backflow assembly testing in most Canadian municipalities. Lead with this for any ICI role.
Cross-Connection Control Specialist
typically a higher-tier backflow certification.
Gas fitter class
G3, G2, G1 in Ontario through TSSA. A or B class in BC, Alberta, and other provinces. G2 is the common ICI working level.
Medical Gas Installer (CSA Z7396.1)
for hospital and healthcare retrofits and new builds. Name it when you hold it.
CSTS-2020
ACSA's general construction-site orientation. Check employer and site acceptance, including any job-specific training. List it only if you have completed it.
Working at Heights
For Ontario construction workers using specified fall-protection equipment, check Ontario's approved working-at-heights training or its recognized WorkplaceNL route, plus equipment-specific training. Elsewhere, confirm the training required for your duties and province.
Confined Space Entry
List completed training relevant to the workplace assessment and required training for your duties. A tank, vault or crawlspace label alone does not establish the applicable confined-space requirements.
H2S Alive
List it when you hold it and it applies to the work. Check the employer's site-specific training requirements.
WHMIS 2015, First Aid/CPR-C
Common site training. List it with the completion or renewal date when useful.
Common Safety Orientation (CSO)
Energy Safety Canada currently offers CSO. List the training you actually hold. Check which orientations your employer accepts, including any legacy OSSA BSO certificate.
For specialty work, also list: press-fitting system manufacturer training (Viega ProPress, NIBCO, Apollo XPress), PEX expansion certification (Uponor, Wirsbo), grooved-pipe training (Victaulic), infloor heating / hydronic experience, and commercial water heater installation training.
Large ICI projects include office towers, mixed-use developments, transit projects, and school board capital programs in the GTA, Montreal, Calgary, and the Lower Mainland. Describe grooved-pipe systems, PEX runs, commercial fixture rough-in, storm and sanitary, and DDC-controlled mechanical rooms when you have that experience. Name the contractor and building.
Healthcare and hospital retrofits
Hospital expansions and retrofits include GTA projects such as Trillium, Sunnybrook, and SickKids, Alberta Health Services builds, and projects with Vancouver Coastal Health or Fraser Health. Some scopes require medical gas installer certification (CSA Z7396.1) or union affiliation. If you've worked a hospital project, name it and call out the medical gas scope.
Oil sands camps and shutdown plumbing
Camp construction at Fort McMurray, Wapasu Creek, and across the Athabasca region runs in waves with the bigger industrial projects. Camp plumbing — modular dorm builds, washrooms, kitchens, water and waste treatment plant work — is its own niche. Check each employer's accepted safety orientations and site-specific training requirements, including whether H2S Alive applies. List only training you actually hold. Travel and camp readiness matter.
High-rise and residential boom
Residential construction in BC, Alberta, and Toronto includes mid-rise and high-rise work. Describe risers, drainage stacks, fixture rough-in, water meter rooms, and production work when you have that experience.
Pipefitter crossover
Many Canadian plumbers move between plumber (306A) and steamfitter/pipefitter (Ontario 307A) scopes on industrial sites. If you've done industrial pipe — process water, glycol heating, compressed air, chilled water — call it out. The crossover is genuinely valued on mechanical maintenance and shutdown work.

Do I need a Red Seal to work as a plumber in Canada?
It depends on the province. The source-backed rows above distinguish compulsory, regulated, and non-compulsory contexts. The Red Seal endorsement is added when you pass the Interprovincial Standards Examination and gives you portability across provinces.
What's the difference between Ontario 306A and Alberta journeyman plumber?
Both end at the same Red Seal trade — Plumber. The source-backed rows above carry the current jurisdiction classifications. Ontario apprentices register with Skilled Trades Ontario under code 306A; Alberta apprentices register with AIT for the four-period apprenticeship. Both write the Red Seal exam at the end. Both are recognised across Canada.
What's the difference between a plumber and a pipefitter?
A plumber (306A in Ontario) primarily installs and services systems carrying potable water, sanitary drainage, storm, natural gas (within trade scope), and related plumbing systems in buildings. A steamfitter/pipefitter (307A in Ontario) primarily installs and services industrial piping systems — process water, steam, compressed air, glycol, chilled water, hydraulics — typically in industrial and ICI settings. There's overlap, and many tradespeople move between scopes. Both are Red Seal trades.
Do I need a gas fitter ticket as a plumber?
You don't strictly need one to be a plumber, but most Canadian plumbing work eventually touches gas — water heaters, boilers, mechanical rooms. A G2 gas fitter class in Ontario (or equivalent in other provinces) lets you handle most of that work yourself, rather than handing it off to a gas fitter. It's a strong differentiator on a resume.
What does CSA B64.10 backflow certification mean?
CSA B64.10 (with B64.10.1 covering testing) is the Canadian standard for backflow prevention assembly maintenance and field testing. A certified backflow tester can install, test, and certify backflow preventers on commercial and ICI water services. Most Canadian municipalities require certified testers for commercial buildings — it's a high-value ticket for plumbers in ICI work.
Do I need medical gas certification for hospital plumbing?
For most hospital plumbing scope — domestic water, drainage, fixture rough-in — no. For medical gas systems (oxygen, vacuum, medical air, anaesthetic gases), yes, you need CSA Z7396.1 medical gas installer certification. List it clearly when you hold it.
