H2S Alive: what the course covers and how to renew it

Updated September 26, 2026

H2S Alive is an Energy Safety Canada course on working safely around hydrogen sulphide (H2S). The course takes 1 day. To take it, you must be able to use a mask and breathing apparatus, and take part in rescue drags. When you pass, you receive a certificate that is valid for three years.

What does H2S Alive cover?

The course teaches you to find and detect H2S, reduce the hazards of working around it, and respond to an H2S release. It mixes theory with hands-on practice.

What do you need to take it?

You must be able to show that you can do these things:

  • Put on a mask and breathe from the breathing apparatus.

  • Take part in rescue drag exercises.

  • Put on and take off the breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Bring government-issued photo ID. You must be ready to take part in English.

You do not need to be clean-shaven. The course does not need a full face seal on the breathing apparatus.

How do you renew it?

If your certificate is still valid, you can take the H2S Alive Blended Renewal. It has two parts:

  • An online theory exam.

  • An in-person skills assessment at an Energy Safety Canada Authorized Training Provider.

Before you sign up, check these points:

  • Contact an Authorized Training Provider near you. Confirm that it offers the skills assessment.

  • You pay one fee for the online course and a separate fee for the assessment.

  • You have 90 days from registration to use the online course.

  • If you fail the assessment, you must register for the classroom course, and fees apply.

When you pass both the online exam and the skills assessment, you get a new certificate, valid for three years.

An expired certificate does not qualify for the blended renewal.
