Before you send your resume

Replace the brackets and delete unused rows or sections. List only equipment you have operated, employers you have worked for, and training or licences you actually hold.
Label estimated operating hours. Keep supervised training and simulator hours separate from hours worked on site. If you are starting out, describe your training and related work honestly.
Tailor the resume to the posting. Check dates, licence status, and each claim before sending it. Leave out your SIN, photo, and reference contact details.

HEO resume examples

These examples are fictional. They show wording for experienced and entry-level operators. Replace them with work or training you actually completed.

Operated a wheel loader to load aggregate trucks and maintain separate stockpiles; completed pre-shift checks and reported leaks to the supervisor.
During supervised excavator practice, completed pre-start checks and excavated a training trench to marked grade.
Supported an excavation crew as a labourer; communicated with the operator as a spotter and kept the designated access route clear.

Use equipment, tasks, conditions, and results you can support. Add real makes, models, or hours where useful. Do not turn training hours into employment experience.

What to include on a Canadian HEO resume

Lead with the equipment, sites, operating hours, training, and tickets that match the work you want:

Equipment you've operated
by make, model, and seat hours. "Cat 793F, 4,200 seat hours" tells a story.
Sites and operators
Suncor, Syncrude, CNRL, Imperial, Vale, Teck. The operator name is the credibility signal.
Trade certification or Red Seal endorsement
List the credential you actually hold, with the issuer and province or territory. Keep equipment training and operating hours separate from trade certification.
Mining common core or operator-specific orientations.
The standard tickets
Driver's licence class and endorsements where relevant to the vehicle and road duties; CSTS-2020, H2S Alive, CSO, Surface Miner Common Core (in Ontario), WHMIS and First Aid where applicable. List only training and credentials you actually hold that match the employer's requirements.

Put your equipment list and operating hours near the top. Add the sites, conditions, and training that support the work you want.

Red Seal context: the 636A/636B/636C trades

The Red Seal program lists three Heavy Equipment Operator trades. They are not offered in every province or territory. The codes below are Ontario trade codes:

Check the designated jurisdictions on the Red Seal trade profile and confirm exam eligibility with the provincial or territorial apprenticeship and certification authority. Requirements depend on the trade and whether you apply as an apprentice or trade qualifier.

List the credential, issuer and province or territory only if you hold it. Describe employer, union or school training separately; operating experience or a course does not by itself establish Red Seal exam eligibility.

"Journeyperson" is the standard provincial term. "Journeyman" still appears in job postings.

The tickets that matter for HEO work in Canada

Site requirements vary. Use this list to check the HEO tickets that apply to the work you want:

Driver's licence for the vehicle and road duties
For on-road driving, check the licence class for the province and the vehicle or truck-trailer combination. Alberta has several commercial classes, including Class 1 and Class 3; Ontario has Class A and Class D truck licences. These are driving credentials, separate from equipment-operation training and trade certification. Do not assume Class 1 or Class A is required for every equipment job. List only the class and endorsements you actually hold.
CSTS-2020
ACSA's general construction-site orientation. Check employer and site acceptance, including any job-specific training. List it only if you have completed it.
H2S Alive (Energy Safety Canada)
List it when you hold it and it applies to the work. Check the employer's site-specific training requirements and your certificate's expiry date.
Common Safety Orientation (CSO)
Energy Safety Canada currently offers CSO. List the training you actually hold. Check which orientations your employer accepts, including any legacy OSSA BSO certificate.
Surface Miner Common Core / Underground Miner Common Core
Ontario has different mining Common Core programs and specialty modules for different operations and duties. Confirm the applicable program and modules with the employer; list only completed training.
WHMIS 2015, Standard First Aid, CPR-C
Common site training. List it with the completion or renewal date when useful.
Confined Space Entry
List completed training relevant to the workplace assessment and required training for your duties. A pit, trench or tank label alone does not establish the applicable confined-space requirements.
Fall Protection
For Ontario construction workers using specified fall-protection equipment, check Ontario's approved working-at-heights training or its recognized WorkplaceNL route, plus equipment-specific training. Elsewhere, confirm the training required for your duties and province.
Aerial Work Platform
useful for inspection and maintenance.
Air-brake endorsement, if relevant
Confirm the provincial air-brake requirements for the vehicle and duties. Ontario uses a Z endorsement; do not apply that label to a credential issued elsewhere.

Specialty equipment-specific certifications that get listed and matter: GPS machine control training (Trimble GCS900, Topcon 3D-MC, Leica iCON), Cat 797F or 793 hauler-specific operator training, Cat D11/D10 dozer ops, Komatsu 980E haulers, face shovel operation (P&H 4100XPC, Cat 7495), finish-grade dozer or motor grader experience to tight tolerances.

Where HEOs work in Canada

Oil sands mining

Fort McMurray and the Athabasca region include large haul-truck fleets at sites such as Suncor Base Plant, Syncrude Mildred Lake, CNRL Horizon and Albian Sands, and Imperial Kearl. Equipment can include Cat 797F, Komatsu 980E, Hitachi EH5000, Cat D11, CAT 994, P&H 4100XPC, and Cat 7495 shovels. List the operator, equipment, seat hours, and rotation when you have that experience. Add CSO, H2S Alive, and CSTS-2020 only when you actually hold them and they apply to the employer's requirements. Confirm site acceptance of any legacy OSSA BSO certificate.

LNG and pipeline site prep

Coastal GasLink site prep, LNG Canada module yard work, Trans Mountain expansion maintenance work, and ongoing pipeline ROW (right-of-way) prep across BC and Alberta have all required dozer, excavator, and grader operators for clearing, grading, and bedding work. Sites care about GPS machine control proficiency and finish-grade tolerance.

Highway and road construction

Examples include Alberta Transportation twinning projects, BC Ministry of Transportation highway expansion, Ontario MTO capital programs, GTHA infrastructure projects, and Quebec REM and highway work. Describe excavator, dozer, grader, or loader work. Include finish-grade tolerances and GPS machine control when you have used them.

Hardrock mining

Vale and Glencore in Sudbury, Teck Highland Valley and Coal Mountain, Newmont Eleonore in Quebec, Iamgold Cote Lake — open-pit and underground operations need haulage, loaders, and equipment maintenance operators. Common-core mining tickets matter here.

Wind and renewables

Civil works on wind farm builds across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario can include foundation excavation, road construction, and crane pad prep.

Is heavy equipment operator a Red Seal trade?

The Red Seal program lists Heavy Equipment Operator (Tractor-Loader-Backhoe), Heavy Equipment Operator (Excavator) and Heavy Equipment Operator (Dozer). Their Ontario trade codes are 636A, 636B and 636C. Check the designated jurisdictions for the specific trade and confirm exam eligibility with the issuing authority.

Do I need a Red Seal endorsement to operate heavy equipment in Canada?

Requirements vary by jurisdiction and work. Ontario's 636A, 636B and 636C trades are non-compulsory; that does not make every province's rules the same. Check the relevant trade authority and employer's requirements. On a resume, distinguish equipment experience and training from a trade certificate or Red Seal endorsement you actually hold.

How is HEO regulated in Alberta?

The Red Seal profiles for these three HEO trades do not list Alberta as a designated jurisdiction. Alberta's alis occupational profile describes on-the-job and formal equipment training. Training is separate from Red Seal certification. Confirm any proposed certification route with the authority that would issue the credential; do not assume operating hours alone establish eligibility.

How do I list seat hours on a resume?

Use a clean table or block on page one. Include the employer or training provider, equipment make and model, operating hours and date range. Label estimates and keep training separate. Replace these placeholders with your own details: "[Equipment make and model] — [Actual employer or training provider] — [Hours, labelled as estimated if needed] — [Dates]."

What's the difference between an Ontario 636B and an Alberta excavator operator?

Ontario's 636B Excavator apprenticeship, administered by Skilled Trades Ontario, has 2,260 on-the-job hours and 300 in-school hours. It is a non-compulsory trade with a certifying exam. Describe Alberta equipment experience as experience. A course or time on site is not itself an Ontario certificate or a Red Seal endorsement. Confirm any assessment route with the issuing authority.

Do I need Surface Miner Common Core for oil sands work?

Ontario has different mining Common Core programs and specialty modules for different operations and duties. Confirm the applicable program and modules with the employer. Do not assume an Ontario Surface Miner program is the ticket for an Alberta oil sands role. For oil sands roles, check each employer's accepted safety orientations and operator-specific site training. Energy Safety Canada currently offers CSO.
