Data centre construction in Canada: projects, trades and pay
Updated September 18, 2026
These five projects have construction underway: three in Alberta, one in Saskatchewan and one in Kamloops. At AHI in Alberta, construction covers the first 10 MW phase of power generation. Meta expects about 3,000 construction workers on site at peak construction in Sturgeon County.
The project site says career opportunities will be posted through the participating companies’ career pages. Meta points job seekers to its general contractor, Frost Collective, for construction information and job opportunities. Typical data centre trades include electricians, pipefitters and refrigeration mechanics.
Find job postings
Frost Collective is the general contractor for Meta’s project. It is a joint venture of Clark Builders and PCL Construction. Stantec and SLB are also on the delivery team.
Werko postings
Werko does not track job postings for data centre projects in Canada yet.
Data centre projects with construction underway
| Project | Status |
|---|---|
| Meta’s Sturgeon Data Centre, a 1 GW data centre in Sturgeon County, Alberta[4][12] | Meta’s data centre in Sturgeon County, Alberta, is under construction[4][3][5] |
| Bell AI Fabric data centre, Rural Municipality of Sherwood, in the Regina area of Saskatchewan[6][13] | Bell Canada’s initial 300 MW project in the RM of Sherwood is under construction[6] |
| AHI AI Hub of Innovation, Blindman Industrial Park, Red Deer County, Alberta[8][7] | The first 10 MW generation phase is under construction and commissioning[7][8] |
| eStruxture CAL-3, a data centre in east Balzac, Rocky View County, Alberta[14][9] | Under construction[9][10] |
| Data centre at 1452 McGill Road, Kamloops, British Columbia, part of Bell AI Fabric[11] | Construction was underway by April 9, 2026[11] |
How many workers these builds need
Three construction workforce estimates, from three sources.
Meta, at peak construction: Meta expects about 3,000 construction workers on site.
Bell’s initial project, throughout construction: the Government of Saskatchewan expects more than 800 local jobs across trades.
Greenlight, at peak construction: Greenlight expects more than 1,000 workers.
Greenlight, work hours: Greenlight expects nearly 4.5 million hours of work.
Greenlight is the gas-fired plant being built to supply the Meta data centre.
Typical data centre trades
| Trade | Typical work for this project type |
|---|---|
| Construction Electrician | Power distribution, backup power, and lighting make electrical work a major share of the build. |
| Industrial Electrician | Switchgear, generators, and industrial controls need industrial electricians. |
| Steamfitter/Pipefitter | Chilled water and liquid cooling systems need pipefitters. |
| Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic | Chillers and precision cooling units need refrigeration mechanics. |
| Sheet Metal Worker | Air handling systems and ductwork need sheet metal workers. |
| Plumber | Domestic water, drainage, and process water systems need plumbers. |
| Ironworker (Structural/Ornamental) | Large building frames use structural steel that ironworkers erect. |
| Mobile Crane Operator | Structural steel, generators, and cooling equipment need crane lifts. |
| Concrete Finisher | Large floor slabs and equipment pads need concrete finishing. |
| Sprinkler Fitter | Large buildings need fire sprinkler systems installed throughout. |
| Insulator (Heat and Frost) | Insulates thermal piping and equipment. |
| Powerline Technician | High-load sites often need new substations and power lines built by powerline technicians. |
These trades are typical for a data centre build. They are not jobs posted by any one project.
Trades Alberta names on the Meta project
The Government of Alberta says Frost Collective employs Alberta electricians, pipefitters, crane operators and engineers on the project.[5]

Tickets in Alberta and Saskatchewan
To do restricted work in the Alberta compulsory trades listed below, you need one of these:
A registered apprenticeship, working under a certified journeyperson.
A journeyperson certificate.
A recognized trade certificate.
These Alberta compulsory trades include:
Electrician
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic
Sheet Metal Worker
Steamfitter-Pipefitter
Plumber
Crane and Hoisting Equipment Operator: Mobile Crane and Tower Crane branches
In Saskatchewan’s compulsory apprenticeship trades listed below, you must be a registered apprentice or a certified journeyperson. If you are not certified, you must register within six months (900 hours) of starting work in the trade.
Saskatchewan’s compulsory apprenticeship trades are:
Construction Electrician
Plumber
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic
Sheet Metal Worker
Sprinkler Fitter
Power supply and grid connections
Data centres need a lot of power, and grid space for them is limited. Alberta’s first temporary limit allows large power users to connect 1,200 MW to the grid. The grid operator has assigned all of it. Other large users enter a second phase.
Meta’s campus combines a 970 MW grid connection with its own power supply from Greenlight. Greenlight is a separate 932 MW gas-fired plant in Sturgeon County.
The Alberta Utilities Commission approved Greenlight on June 19, 2026. The commission decides power plant applications; it does not approve or regulate data centres. Aecon and Técnicas Reunidas hold Greenlight’s engineering, procurement and construction contract.
In Saskatchewan, a company proposing a new data centre must supply its own power. The first phase of Bell’s transmission connection is expected to be finished by the end of 2026.
Data centres still being planned
| Project | Status |
|---|---|
| A 390 MW data centre and a 190 MW gas-fired generation facility in the Spruce Lake Industrial Park, Saint John, New Brunswick[28] | Provincial environmental impact assessment review in progress[28] |
| TransAlta’s Keephills site, Parkland County, Alberta[29] | Early planning. TransAlta says a new data centre is not being built at this time[30] |
| Beacon Heartland Data Centre, proposed in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland[12] | In development and planning, with no final investment decision yet[24][12] |
| TELUS Sovereign AI Factory cluster in Kamloops and Vancouver[31] | Proposed three-site cluster. The federal government had not committed funding for it as of May 11, 2026[32][31] |
Indigenous agreements and engagement
The Sturgeon Data Centre project team says it is committed to working with Indigenous communities, organizations and businesses. That includes workforce participation and training.[1]
