LNG projects in B.C.: status, trades and pay

LNG Canada is already running. Cedar LNG is being built now. LNG Canada Phase 2 is working toward a possible final decision on whether to invest. Ksi Lisims LNG has its environmental assessment certificate and LNG facility permit.
Cedar LNG expects its busiest construction year in 2026. The floating LNG unit is under development overseas for delivery to Kitimat in 2028. Tickets you need in B.C.
To work in one of B.C.’s seven compulsory trades, you need one of these:
A journeyperson certificate.
A Trade Qualifier or Uncertified Experienced Worker designation from SkilledTradesBC.
A registered apprenticeship, working under a certified journeyperson or a designated Uncertified Experienced Worker.
A Certificate of Qualification from another province or territory, or an Interprovincial Red Seal, counts. You are exempt while in a SkilledTradesBC-recognized training program that includes work experience.
B.C.’s seven compulsory trades are:
Construction Electrician
Industrial Electrician
Powerline Technician
Steamfitter/Pipefitter
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic
Gasfitter Class A and Class B
Sheet Metal Worker

Crane operators: certification from July 2027
Skilled Trades Certification requirements take effect for Mobile Crane Operator and Tower Crane Operator in British Columbia on July 5, 2027. The requirements do not apply to some crane classifications, such as Mobile Crane Operator: Hydraulic 80 Tonnes and Under. A Trade Qualifier without certification by July 5, 2027 will receive a Temporary Authorization. That authorization allows 24 months of work while completing certification.[6]
How long a build takes
LNG Canada started building in January 2020 and shipped its first cargo on June 30, 2025. Cedar LNG started construction right after its final investment decision on June 25, 2024.
Who runs each project
LNG Canada runs the LNG Canada project. Cedar LNG Partners, with the Haisla Nation and Pembina Pipeline Corp., leads Cedar LNG. Cedar LNG calls itself the world’s first Indigenous majority-owned LNG facility. The Nisga’a Nation, Rockies LNG Limited Partnership and Western LNG LLC run Ksi Lisims LNG together. The Major Projects Office expects the Haisla Nation to see direct benefits from LNG Canada Phase 2, including jobs for its members.
