Major project
Red Chris Mine expansion: status, trades and camp
Updated September 18, 2026
Status: Not under construction, waiting on approvals or a final decision, as of July 23, 2026
Regulators have approved the expansion. Newmont had not made its final decision to invest as of July 23, 2026. In June it said it was moving toward that decision later in 2026.
Newmont has major regulatory approvals to expand the Red Chris copper and gold mine. The expansion would move mining underground using a method called block caving. Newmont had not made its final decision to invest as of July 2026. The mine already operates as an open pit near Iskut, in northwest British Columbia.
When work could start
Newmont has not announced a construction start date. In July 2026, Newmont was still studying whether the expansion was practical. In June 2026, its chief executive said the company was moving toward its final decision to invest later in 2026.
Mining would move underground, which needs new underground infrastructure. The processing plant would be expanded to handle up to 15 million tonnes of ore a year.
